For You Feed

The For You feed is X's default algorithmic timeline that ranks posts by predicted interest and engagement, not by reverse-chronological recency.

Open X and the first tab you land on is For You — an algorithmically ranked feed that decides, post by post, what you're most likely to engage with and shows you that, rather than a simple newest-first list. The other tab, Following, is the old reverse-chronological timeline. For You is the default, so it's where most of the attention on the platform actually lands.

Why this matters for trending: reach on X is increasingly won or lost in the For You ranking, not just among your followers. When people post a hashtag in a tight, genuine burst, X's recommendation system can surface those posts to non-followers in For You — which recruits more real participants, which drives the velocity a trend needs. A term that only reaches existing followers rarely builds enough momentum to climb the board.

  • Predicted engagement ranks each post — replies, reposts, dwell time.
  • Non-followers can see your posts, so even a small account can contribute to a trend.
  • Recency alone isn't enough — a post has to earn its slot.

In practice this means a coordinated push isn't just about volume; it's about producing posts the For You algorithm wants to distribute. For the ranking signals behind it, see the X algorithm explained and the X Algorithm entry.
