X Algorithm
The X algorithm is the recommendation system that decides which posts show up — and how high — in each user's For You feed, weighing engagement, how fast it arrives, replies and reposts, dwell time, author authority, recency and relevance.
The X algorithm is the ranking engine behind the For You feed. Every time someone opens X, it scores thousands of candidate posts and orders them by how likely each one is to earn a reaction from that specific person — then shows the winners at the top.
It never reads one signal in isolation. Instead it blends many, including:
- Engagement and its velocity — not just how many likes, replies and reposts a post gets, but how fast they arrive in the first minutes.
- Replies and reposts — weighted more heavily than a passive like, because they signal real conversation.
- Dwell time — how long people stop and actually read.
- Author authority — account history, verification, and past engagement.
- Recency and relevance — freshness and topical fit for each viewer.
Why it matters: the algorithm rewards early velocity. A post that sparks fast, genuine interaction in its opening window gets pushed to far more feeds than one that trickles the same total over a day. That is also how a hashtag climbs onto the Trends board — concentrated, early engagement is exactly the pattern the system amplifies.
