Velocity

Velocity is how fast posts using a term are growing right now — the single biggest signal X uses to decide what trends.

Velocity is the rate of acceleration behind a term — how quickly the number of posts using it is climbing in this moment, not how many exist in total. It is the strongest single input into X's trending decision: a sharp spike almost always beats a slow, steady trickle.

Picture two hashtags. One collects 10,000 posts spread evenly across a day; the other collects 3,000 posts inside twenty minutes. The second has far higher velocity, and it is the one X pushes onto the trends list — because trending rewards a curve that is bending upward, a conversation catching fire faster than the noise around it.

Why it matters to anyone trying to trend:

  • Timing beats volume. Concentrating posts into a tight window creates the spike the algorithm looks for; the same posts dribbled out over hours never register.
  • Coordination is the lever. Getting many real accounts to post the same term at the same time is exactly how you manufacture velocity — the core of a manual trend campaign.
  • It decays fast. Velocity is a right now measurement, so a trend fades the instant the acceleration stops.

Velocity works alongside volume and location to rank every trending topic. For the full mechanics of the ranking, read how Twitter trends work.
