WOEID
A WOEID (Where On Earth ID) is the numeric code X/Twitter uses to identify a location, so it can show that place's trends — worldwide is 1.
When you look at X's trends, you're never seeing "the internet's" trends — you're seeing one specific location's trends, and that location is identified by a WOEID. Short for Where On Earth ID, it's a number (originally from Yahoo's GeoPlanet) that maps to a country, region, or city. Worldwide is 1; the United States, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Brazil and hundreds of cities each have their own.
Why it matters for trending: X calculates a separate trend board for every WOEID. A hashtag can be #1 in Türkiye (WOEID 23424969) and invisible in the United States at the same minute, because they're two different competitions. If you want to trend where your audience actually is, you have to win that location's board — not a global one that doesn't really exist for most surfaces.
